Toto Wolff Set to Divest Shareholding Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Team Principal Wolff has guided the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
