Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
