Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
